I Hope Vintage is cool, Because I’m Vintage too
One of the beauties of this hobby that we all love so much is the diversity in collecting, no doubt.
You can collect pretty much anything you want, and there will likely be a community of folks who share the same sentiment and collection.
For me, lately, I’ve fallen back in love with vintage.
Baseball and hockey in particular.
I find myself drifting away from the shiny and ultra-modern stuff and towards the classic cardboard that one thinks of when you say baseball cards.
Some of this may be because I myself am vintage now.
A lot of the cards vintage guys are searching for were cards I grew up — the 1984 Topps baseball set. The 1979 O-Pee-Chee hockey set and so on. I remember these packs on the counter at Abbott Drugstore, which was on the corner of the street when I was a kid.
I remember the players not just in baseball and hockey folklore, but in reality.
The first baseball game I went to was at Tigers Stadium and the squad faced off against George Brett and the Kansas City Royals.
Now, I find myself chasing 1975 Topps Brett rookies.
Has this happened to many of you?
These little pieces of cardboard have become so much more to me lately. They’re agents of nostalgia and in a very strange way, a way for me to relive some of those days many years ago.
I remember my first pack.
I remember the first card show I set up at like it happened last weekend, and setting out the cards in our homemade showcase. Little did I know at that time, just how much this hobby would be such a big part of my life.
So, I expect to be spending more time with the vintage crowd, diving into this aspect of the hobby more than I have in the past.
The history of these two beautiful games is chronicled in these cards, and I can’t wait to see it.
