Perks

A great friend of mine in the hobby recently passed something along to me that I found hilarious, and at the same time a little too close to reality to be completely comfortable with!

And in the decades that I’ve been involved in this hobby, this little graph has held firm, and I’m  betting that decades from now it will remain true.

And yet, we still flock to it like Monarchs to Mexico… year after year, generation after generation… same story.

The real question is… why?

The real answer is…. Because it’s awesome, and sometimes being smart, practical and wise just isn’t much fun!

Plus, and I don’t know about you, but I stopped impressing women quite a while ago now, coming to terms with the realization that I am clearly not that impressive to most women.

Debt, well, that’s kinda like having a grizzly bear as a pet, I suppose. Sure, they’re cute and can be funny and cuddly at times, and yep, we see folks like Grizzly Adams playing soccer with theirs, but sooner or later he’s probably going to kill you with one swipe of his paw and have you for brunch or something.

It’s a reality much like death and taxes, right?

So, if I’m going to dig a hole, I’d at least like to line that hole with RPAs and Young Gun Silver, Red and Gold Outbursts!

It does remind me, however, of one story from the turn-back-time-machine (cue old-fashioned music).

Way back in the day, when I was first starting out this card business-thing, I maxed out two credit cards, emptied the bank account and sold about everything I had at the time to buy 12 cases of 1990 Score hockey from our distributor, convinced I would open eight cases and get enough Eric Lindros Future Superstars cards to retire, then pack out the remaining cases at shows over the next few months.

I also thought the sight of a mountain of sports card cases would impress my then-girlfriend, giving her some sign of my business savvy and impending success in this game.

Well, we got plenty of Lindros rookies — and so did everyone else driving the price down and down and down…

The design was hideous and largely rejected by the masses, and the QC sucked.

Aside from that, this plan of mine went well.

And how did my girlfriend see this?

She could have cared less (but all my hobby buddies were impressed).

Nonetheless, this little meme hit me in a way that prompted me to share it… hope you all find it as entertaining as I did, despite it hitting a little too close to home!
